Tororo Gohan | Grated Yam Rice

Tororo Gohan is a simple yet nourishing Japanese dish made by pouring grated yam (nagaimo or yamaimo) over a bowl of steamed rice. The sticky, fluffy texture of the yam pairs beautifully with the warm rice, creating a smooth and refreshing meal that is both light and energizing. Traditionally enjoyed with soy sauce or dashi for extra flavor, Tororo Gohan has long been valued in Japanese households as a healthy and easily digestible dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Japanese short-grain rice (cooked)
  • 100 g nagaimo or yamaimo (Japanese yam)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (or dashi soy)
  • Optional: chopped green onions or nori strips for garnish

Instructions

  1. Peel the yam carefully (it can be slippery) and grate it into a bowl.
  2. Add soy sauce (or dashi soy) to the grated yam and mix gently.
  3. Place freshly cooked rice in a bowl.
  4. Pour the tororo (grated yam) over the rice.
  5. Garnish with green onions or nori strips if desired.

Tips

  • Use a suribachi (Japanese mortar) for a fluffier texture.
  • A splash of dashi broth can add depth to the flavor.
  • Be cautious when peeling the yam, as its stickiness can make it slippery.

Serving Ideas

  • Serve with pickles (tsukemono) and miso soup for a balanced meal.
  • Pair with grilled fish for a traditional Japanese set menu.
  • Enjoy as a light breakfast or quick dinner.
